Family Portraits

My parents were visiting from Sydney last week and we took the opportunity of some shots with us all together. I used the D300 50mm 1.4 set on a tripod. Three studio lights, a softbox camera left and one camera right. One light shot through an umbrella from the floor directly behind the subjects to light the background which was a white sheet. I was short of room so the rear light was hard up against the backgroundwith the standing subjects about half a metre in front. This caused some problems with shadows and uneven light on the background which I go rid of in PP. It also caused some blown highlights on my mums hairdo when she was standing.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the placement of the rear light, and any other c&c.

Does anyone have an idea on what the odd shaped light area on my daughters (standing) right arm would be from. I suspect it is light spillage from the softbox as both were in front of the camera position but it does not appear on other shots.
