I am very happy to let everyone know that I have officially finished my honours year today, and to celebrate me and Mozzie headed down to the south pylon of the coathanger this afternoon. Although not my best work I thought i would share some of the stuff I did today.

These were all done in AutoPano Pro - which I am really enjoying - but the exposures are as shot

This one is nice, but the coathanger is underexposed


This one is a overexposed, but the coathanger looks as if it is very close to being correct.....


I really like this one!





Sorry I wanted to sneak this one in as well - this one was done using CS2 as AutoPano Pro could not work it out

Great shots Cameron. Even though your favourite looks a little dark in the post it looks fine at full res. Congratulations on finishing the studies, now it is time to go out and earn the big bucks.

I quite like #3, the sunset colours on the opera house / city are great, I reckon you could pull a bit of detail from the shadows though, I might have a play on it tonight if you don't mind.

Nice panos, I like them all with the first probably being my favourite. I am not sure the bridge is underexposed, it regularly changes colour, and one can often see 3 shades in 5 minutes of watching it

Great pano I liked the first one. I didn't think it was under exposed, but I do like the yellow colour in the third.

thanks for all the comments guys! I probably should have a go at playing with the raw image and getting a bit more detail out of the images but i was pretty stoked just to have had the time to shoot yesterday and wanted to share.

I do look forward to seeing Gerry work his magic though.

Perhaps you can share your technique here. Which focal length, how many shots, how much overlap etc for people who are new to the panoramic stuff..? Just to confirm, did you use a pano head?

its only an Honours....*dreams of a PhD...* but thanks mate.

Technique??? Well as always I try for at least 35mm focal length (some here are shorter but I try for 35-70mm as to avoid the distorting effect of the wide end), these vary from 3 shots to 20 shots (yep i have a 99mp stitch for one of these). I expose manually, keeping it constant (so i do a quick scan of the pano before I start and then guess an average exposure for the whole scene, set it and leave it), and then try to give each photo between 20-50% overlap. These were all done hand held...I was not going to lug my tripod (its heavy) to uni and I dont own a pano head (from these experiences I dont think I really need one...but I could be convinced otherwise).

To stitch I am using AutoPano Pro...which is just absolutely awesome although you have to be patient (well at least on my computer - AMD Athlon X2 4200+ with 3gb RAM)

I have been trying to stitch a 32 shot pano in Panorama Maker and it falls overevery time when it gets to the crop process. It tells me it has run out of memory, which I have 3gb, and research has reveled the software is optimised to run on 64 bit systems and I only have a 32 bit system. I have downloaded a trial AutoPanoGiga and will give that a go.

Why don't you DL the 64 bit trial version of Windoze 7, and try it on that environment? You could install W7 onto a separate HDD (that would be my recommendation) and install some extra RAM too, both for not a whole lot of $$$.

I am not sure I understand, I get the bit about installing W7 on a seperate HDD but my hardware is 32bit. I run a Petium 111 Xeon , 2533mhz with 3 gb ram. Actually 2 x 2gb sticks but xp pro will only see 3gb.

I see that there's alot of nikon shooters here. Could I ask do you all use the NEF raws in the processing of the panoramic stitch or do you process each raw file, save it as TIF/JPG and then stitch them? Although I could open the NEF files in the software, they don't seem to recognise the settings, especially the sharpening, d-lights, etc.

I go from NEF to Tiff then process the pano and save as Tiff, then head back to captureNX and finally save back to NEF. NEF gives much better file sizes than Tiff when using my software. I don't typically edit the NEF files before going to the pano software - I leave the tweaking until after the pano is created.

I understand that 64bit and W7 will use all the memory but do you need to have a 64 bit cpu?

no worries! I think autopano pro will recognise nef, but at the moment i am feeding it jpgs (from camera) only to keep the processing time low.

I shoot both jpg and RAW side by side because I am lazy!
