Hey all

Been a while since I logged into these forums, thought I might drop by and say hello.

Wasn't sure where to post this so, I thought here would do, might see the Sydney mob during the 5 yr AW

A couple of shots from my latest toy :D

New toy?

#1 My feeling on this shot is that you need to be closer to the in focus subject as the left side of the image tends to overpower the pole. There also appears to be some halation on the top of the pole, whether this is due to over sharpening or lighting conditions I’m not sure.

#2 This shot I like - the coffee container blends in well with, what I suppose is, an industrial type background.

#3 The lady in this shot is far too dark compared to the background which has no focal point of interest and I therefore feel that it fails in holding interest for the viewer.

I like the second one, just find the background on the right hand side a little distracting starting from just behind the coffe. Might be just me though.

I couldn't agree more with the above comments. Number 2 is really quite interesting with the background lines actually focussing your attention back on to the cup. The way you've shot number one is interesting- it almost makes it look like a model. Number three could do with a little of the HDR treatment.

I like the 2nd image, although I am not a fan of Danes' retail process. :D The DOF and converging background lines work.

I like the 1st as well and agree with Chris about placement.

Now, I am a little stumped as to your new toy - the square format of the images and the DOF are confusing me - I appreciate the format can be easily achieved in post. I am betting on either a square format medium format or your LF camera. Or something else. :D

Thanks all for the feedback

The new toy is a 'blad, all shot with the 80mm 2.8 on expired Portra 160VC. I sold the Mamiya and bought a used 501c kit off ebay.

I thought I had stopped down more on the the first one and actually ended up overexposing, that was the best scan I could get. I did take that shot just after sunrise, after being out shooting since 5pm the afternoon before.

Thanks for your thoughts re composition on the third one sirhc55. I really struggle to get good portraits.

Images 2 and 3 don't do anything for me, but I really like the first one. The soft, even, pastel tones are quite pleasing, and the contrast between the sharp post and the soft background works really well. Even the slight tilt of the post to the right adds interest to the image. It's a deceptively simple image that holds a lot of interest.
