I took this picture when I was experimenting with a 50mm. lense to see how a close up photo of a flower would come up and a judicious use of Photoshop curves. Do you think it works?

I have to admit that the colours are very nice...good work with there....BUT the Iris itself is a strange to look at, there is a lot of it out of focus (I do that all the time as well) and in this case these bits are often in front of the focal plane and obscuring the detail of the flower. These flowers a a pain to shoots but a bit more DOF and maybe a different angle will help.

I agree with Cameron on this shot, BUT. . . I think that as an abstract it works 100%

colours are great here and I actually like the use of the negative space on the RHS, but I think cam has nailed it...
but a bit more DOF and maybe a different angle will help

The main subject has to have adequate focus and DOF. Otherwise you can go abstract but maybe blur the whole image.

i'll go the opposite. i love the fact that there is no sharp point in this shot. its got a very pastelly painted kind of look about it that imo looks fantastic. my only point would be that the browny leaves are somewhat distracting as they clash with the tone of the rest of the colours. great job zaf.

The original image...very seductive/sensual...magic blues. It works at every level for me and I would just love to see it as a very dark, very large print framed and hanging on a white gallery wall. Now I'm back for another look.

Hi,
I agree with all of the above. This sort of shot maybe works better if you think of it more as an abstract than a 'flower' shot. A little more DOF, as already mentioned would help. I'd also be inclined to try to get the long bottom leaf more highlighted like the rest of the flower. This maybe would make it 'leap' off the page even more. I really like the background, its almost like it's a panning shot where you got motion blur. Oh, and when nobody's watching I would cut the brown leaf off and re-shoot, the blue-green of the shot works really well and I think the brown leaf detracts a little. The vibrancy of the blue and yellow work really well in the shot.
