went out to mallala tonight to get some photos of this XY GT replica, started life off as a falcon 500 6 cylinder now sports a 351 to suit the gt theme.

didnt see any rain and stars in the sky the whole way out there, got there and the ground was wet so they must of got some showers luckly the xy was dry.

ended up shooting it in around 40minutes talking alot of car stuff in that time aswell.

shoot was done at the entrance gates at the raceway.

regret not using my 50mm lens, i think the results would of been much nicer and the images more crisp and sharp. going from the lancer shoot were i used the 18-55mm lens and it worked fine to this one were it struggled. i know for next time though and will use both lens on shoots till i can afford a better all round lens.

That car actually looks like a hard one to shoot, the combination of the black and yellow means it is inevitable you will get some dark patches.

The first image is the strongest in my opinion, however a slight crop might help, I do like the space in the picture but I think just a little extra crop might help..

I like how you can see the dice in the interior, this one would have been a perfect candidate for illuminating the inside..

The off centre composition in the last does not do it justice in my opinion..

Your light painting has really come along way from the first efforts.. This is not as good as the Lancer but still pretty good.

What are you using now to paint the car?

I like the wet road look and the dry patch in front is kinda distracting.

The XY is an aw some car and you have done it proud.

Unfortunately the inconsistency of the surface the car is sitting on is distracting to the eye.
Whilst the wet road really contrasts with the car colour(yellow), it swallows up the dark tyres and stripes making it difficult to easily discern the vehicles outline. Roll on summer.
I guess that is the challenge of staged shots in an uncontrolled environment!

yeah there wasnt a single drop of rain and only stars in the skys so i thought we would be alright all the way from my place at north haven to mallala which is an hours drive. i would of cancelled if i had known it was going to rain, light showers in the arvo were forecasts so i thought id be fine at night.

as for lighting this is the same softbox and led light i have been using for the past couple of months.

cheers for the feedback i know the owner will be happy, i know the pictures all need touch ups here and there these were a few i did some quick edits on and have many more to go through. this shoot was really just a test shoot so he can see my work, he said he is getting me back in a couple of months to show me his chev roadster he has almost finished. and he gave me a location idea for that so i have a couple of months to find a location to suit.

I agree with the others comments except whether black is harder to light than yellow? As long as it's reflective black and reflective yellow, I didn't think there would be much difference?? For example, if you had silks for this shoot would you light the silks for the blacks at a higher intensity?

To phrase it differently, I do agree that the silver would be harder when compared with black and yellow as it is more reflective. It is actually evident in the picture...

OR am I on a totally wrong track here?

Lastly, I think we need a large bucket of water for out lightpainting shoot...it would appear that the road looks awesome when it's wet??

your a thinker... i think a bucket should suffice...theres a big tap at the end of the ramp...bags not going down there in the dark..

Your photos continue to improve, and you are now mastering the light painting. I'd like to see a greater level of acuity in your images now. Sometimes they appear a tad soft to me. I don;t know if this is an issue relating to your glass, or perhaps your tripod isn't up to the job, or your focus technique isn't quite there, or perhaps a little more work in post ...

cheers gary, i did notice the tripod did actually have some shake to it, this doesnt happen when i use the 50mm lens due to it being close to the camera but when i use a longer lens it does. so that is definatley on list of things to get. i think its got something to do with me loosing one of the feet on it, and i broke a part on the quick release when i first got it.

i feel i need better glass anyway, but i will make do with what i have for the time being but i dont want to blame that because the 18-55mm is a fairly sharp lens around from about f/8.0 and more. focusing at nighttime is hard to say the least im using a torch to light up a section of the car then using autofocus. then turning off autofoucs and setting the timer off. i want something that suits low light so something around f/1.8 to f/2.8 but some that can move between 10-50mm will be perfect.

i think that as lighting goes i have sort of mastered the flow of the lightbox, this is one thing the guys who are doing the lightpainting meet will probably find difficult at first. the way you move the lightbox over the car need to be smooth.

i love my pics to be picked on though, makes me go away and try to improve. if i hadnt of joined these photography forums i would of still been putting photos like this up and thinking they were good
