First weekend with new 300mm lens - #4 - Eye on the Ball

The 300mm also excels at sports. I tried it out at a Sydney AFL Division 3 match on the weekend out at Richmond. Due to the size of the field, probably a 400mm would have been a bit nicer, but the 300 is still very usable, particularly with a TC strapped on. Had to stop down to about f/6.3 for good sharpness, but it goes alright.

I get plenty of shots where the player is running with the ball or lining up to kick a set shot... Not a lot of skill needed to take those - so I have picked out a few where the action is just a bit more unpredictable.. and the ball is just out of reach. Some of the expressions on faces is priceless.

Des,

I love #2 here.

The composition is priceless, IMHO. A player grabbing a player trying to grab the just-out-of-reach ball, all progressing neatly from top left to bottom right.

Great colour, and exposure and focus nailed. Wb is slightly out, btw.

Well done.

Gary - that's exactly what I thought when I was reviewing my shots too :)

You might be right about the WB, I don't think I bothered checking it when PPing.. Thought "Ah, they look close enough".

Love shots like this, and you have some very sharp images considering the unpredictable action, as you said.

#3 to me looks as thought the ball is really hot and everyone is afraid to touch it haha :D
