Some Random D60 images

Hey all,

I just thought I would share some of the images that I have been taking using my new Nikon D60 (almost new - 7 shutter actuation - factory refurb from the USA). I have to admit that I have missed this size camera (I started my DSLR adventure with a D40x purchased on the 25th August 2007) and the return to the basic body has been both a sentimental and learning adventure. Using the rangefinder mode to MF my Tamron SP 17-50mm f/2.8 and Nikkor AF-D 50mm f/1.8 is has been interesting, whilst the AF-S lenses have been a joy to use.

It is really interesting how the D60 processes colours and exposes compared to my D300 and S5 Pro.

with 70-200VR @ 200mm, f/2.8, 100 ISO, 1/125 sec
Image

with 180mm Macro @ f/5, 100 ISO, 1/125 sec
Image

with SP 17-50mm @ 50mm, f/4, 100 ISO, 1/125 sec
Image

with SP 17-50mm @ 50mm, f/7.1, 400 ISO, 1/100 sec - taken in B&W
Image

These are all taken straight out of camera and resized..from the Basic JPG (RAW + JPG only allows Basic.....). Please let loose and rip into me so I get some feedback!

No one will rip into you Cameron.
I have a few niggles though,
#1 the light on top of is head/arm draws my eye away from an otherwise nice shot. Not much you could do about it though.
#2 feels a bit drab. I know you have not done any post on these but it would be better if the ship stood out a little more.
I am pretty good at producing drap images myself
#3 Has nice colour.
#4 seems like 100th of a sec was probably a bit slow for the speed she was moving.
Hope that helps mate, You probably had these thoughts yourself anyway.
Glad to see you enjoying your new purchase.

Hey Cam,

These are looking quite soft, I am not sure whether it just the resizing for the web or something else, looking at the ship image, maybe 1/125 is a bit slow for your 180mm beastie. Also maybe try progessive sharpening when resizing for the web, a saved batch process (.set) in NX2 makes this a breeze.

The flower shot is the strongest in this set, great colours and composition, i think hitting it with a touch of d-lighting and contrast will make it jump out at ya!

The BW image needs to be more 'black and white' its currently greyish, I had a quick crack and using about 5o contrast makes it much more of a 'black and white' image.

You had your work cutout for ya in the first image, shooting against a brightly lit window....

hope this helps.

Thanks guys.

Matt K. not sure why images are not showing *kicks web host*

Gerry and Colin - thanks for the comments, these are without work on them and the softness may have something to do with the slow shutter speed and also maybe the strange compression thing that Surenj has pointed out in the past with the forum. I do like the first image a lot, and was really happy with and agree with the comments you have made about colour/contrast adjustments.

I personally quite liked the ship...but you are right about it being a bit drab....the Navy was sneaking out to sea!

Cameron,

Apart from what's being said already:

I would straighten the horizon in the sea.

The last photo (as long as the girl is sharp) could be improved if it was slightly wider field of view + no distractions in the distance.

My fav is the first.

[ If I were you, I wouldn't mention which camera took these shots! you don't want people to have a pre conceived opinion of your photos! ]

 I don't think I could jibe, even if I wanted to!! D60 is already 'better' than what I have!

What I was meaning was, it is irrelevant which camera took the picture. Our critique should not depend on the camera. What do you think?
