'Stranded'

I've been processing my more recent images of NZ and this one stuck out in my mind as looking like a forced landing on some inhospitable mountain in the Andes. I think someone already made that movie though. No one was eaten this day. (As far as i know)

Specs: D700, Sigma 12-24 @ 12mm, F4.5 (-0.7EV) and 1/3200. The ISO was 1EV below 200. (Nice feature of the D700. Lets me use a wide aperture in full sunlight and in the snow)

The pleasant vignetting is courtesy of the old Sigma lens. That's my camera bag about halfway back to the plane. The location was the top of the Tasman Glacier, New Zealand. The landing was interesting. Bouncy Bouncy Bouncy Bouncy etc.

I call it, 'Stranded'

Love it~! You did well to hide the vomit marks on the snow.

This looks like a once in a lifetime image unless you are into extreme skiing etc

Did you try doing a infrared conversion with some fake colour perhaps?

Could I ask why you used a f4.5 ?

Great shot Steve - fantastic that you got so much depth and the colour of the snow, but no blow outs !!! Love it
Only one question - was the shot taken on an angle, or is the ground actually sloping away to the left ??

I haven't tried that. I might revisit this another time though. I still have half my images from the trip to sort through first.

You can ask but I may not have an answer A moment of madness perhaps. I was in a hurry and all excited about standing on top of a glacier. As for 'once in a lifetime' I will definitely do this again sometime. (Might even take 'proper' photos then too.)

Actually that's a good question. The horizon, if you could see it, is level. I used the mountains in the background as a reference for the horizon. The glacier certainly does slope to the left. The tracks in the snow is the plane drifting down the slope

Yeah, I know. I think it adds to the atmosphere, that's my excuse. I could have cloned it out I suppose. It's closer than it looks too as the image was shot at 12mm.
