Hi guys & Gals,

Without a good flash unit, I've been lpaying with sunlight and shade to try and promote a 3d effect. I felt I got it with this shot of my beautiful Go board.

If anyone is intersted it is a game between Honimbo Shusaki and Honimbo Shuho in 1861.

I would appreciaet any hints as far as lighting, colour, shadows, etc go.

Thanks.

i know you are using natural lighting but still i would think the white rocks should be white...

you can fix that in a second with colour balance adjustments in PS.
Also, while shooting this scene, you could have tried adjusting exposure compensation a tad too (increase of course), or maybe you could have used a different white balance setting..what were you shootin' in? looks like probably incandescent....?

anyways, i like thi shot! nice angle, nice colours...its a keeper

I shot it outside under the veranda. There is a perspex skylight above (you can see the reflection in the white stones). I setup a blanket to block the backlight so the main source was indirect sunlight from the right.

I just tried to whiten the picture and it lost all it's lovely warmth. I whitened just the white stones and it is very high contrast, almost hard to look at, even thought it is more life-like.

Thanks for the feedback.

Yeah, I followed the instructions in the first thread, but darwin online seems to restrict access somehow. Does anybody else use Darwin? Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

I don't think you're doing anything wrong... Darwinonline (along with a lot of other free sites) does not allow direct linking to photos. You can either move to another site (Pixspot is free, others are not) or just use URL links in your posts rather than embedding the image.
