Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Gerry and I had an interesting time photographing the sunrise at southhead today. I have learnt that HDR is not a good idea if there is significant flare in the image! I agree that one needs a lens wider than 17mm [which is not really wide on a crop]. I wished that the graduated filter had a ND8 version. [I didn't have a non graduated ND filter or polariser] I did have a infrared filter however....  [Can anyone tell me what the flare in the original cokin filters is like? Ebay spoofs are really bad I think. or was it my lens.. Hmm...] For your C&C. Next time I think I can get better composition.

yeah, the flare is a real pain, i noticed alot of my shots had flare, but only noticed when i reviewed them at home... ie.  Regards the composition, given that we had never been there I think we did ok, I am sure next time it will easier to pre-plan the types of compositions one is looking for - I did not have any particular composition in mind going into that one this morning, however next time i will try be more prepared. I really like that image with the fishing boat, that could well be mistaken for a shot off Boome WA!  The silhouette style is quite a good option for this location.

Great images there Surenj, I really like the colours and the silhouettes of the last three. As for your questions regarding flare from Cokin Filters....in my experience, I have not noticed any.
As for 17mm on a crop sensor, I am in the same boat as you. There is always pano stitching!

I am looking in to the Canon 10-22. For pano stitching you need to move back and zoom in; In this case, that may have been tricky.

No light painting Surenj?
Like the first of these but find the blurred photographer (assume Gerry) a bit distracting and would clone him out. You still have the fisherman there for interest. Wouldn't mind seeing the colour version of this one as well.
The 2nd one is also good but this is where I thought you might have used a bit of light painting to enhance the big lump of black in the foreground

This was with an infra red filter. The colour version is red!

yeah panos would be good, but with all that water moving around it gets tricky, I did try a couple but you really have to chose your composition carefully or you will be manually plugging in control points... Only it would have to be a sunset shot. Do fishermen go out at sunset?
correct and depends on whether they are fishermen or drug smuggelrs.. No light painting Surenj?
believe it or not the sunrise crept up on us very quickly and there was not much time to experiment and get things right, I had a few goes but the lighting was too blotchy to be anything decent.. Gerry) a bit distracting and would clone him out.

Definitely. Still, I think we got there as early as practical. I haven't quite got the hang of panos yet. I thought about it but didn't think this scenery would benefit as only parts of it was strong in composition. I suppose one could pano stich two images rather than more.  Thanks everyone for their comments.
