... documentary

For the last 3 Sunday nights, ABC has been showing a documentary on the life of Charles Darwin around publishing "Origin of Species". The documentary included various scenes from Oxford University, including stone heads atop posts on a fence around one of the buildings. That reminded me that I had take photographs of 5 of those heads when we were there in 1991. So I scanned them and here they are.

I hope I'm allowed to include 5 images because I didn't want to eliminate one of them.

All shots taken with a Nikon F-801s on Kodachrome 64. I think it was with the 35-70mm kit lens.

Just check the EXIF. It should be in there

I really like these.
They really are the sorts of thing I notice & try to capture, though I don't recall seeing them when I was there. Still I was only in Oxford about two hours
Love your use of DOF to separate them from the background while still maintaining a sense of what is there.

We have been attending a series of lectures at AGNSW loosely based on Darwin's influence on the world. Yesterday was looking at Cezanne (and others!) and how secularism, science and technology altered the way artists saw and captured the world. I was aware of the influence of the development of photography, but it would appear that Darwinian ideas had just as big an effect. The highlight though has to have been Chris Darwin talking about how having him as an ancestor has affected his life.

Next Sunday, the last :(, topics are "Brancusi, Metaphor and Metamorphosis" - whatever that means and "Intelligent Design". Looking forward to it.

Didn't you use a EXIF back for your film camera?

I like the tones of these. Lovely indeed. Need to figure out how to get this same feel in digital. [Also the inbuilt high quality softboxes help with the lighting]

I first looked at these images thinking, 'good lord he got uglier with each sculpture' - but then it clicked that they are different people, (forgive me, i'm a bit slow sometimes) I then thought 'hey they look like Gilgamesh at Sydney Uni' then I read your thread  I have watched parts of that docu, interesting and I never realised some other dude was coming up with the same theory half way round the world...

These are nice pictrues and really remind me of teh lovely sandstone buildings and sculptures at sydney uni!
