Why IS is sometimes helpful

Last night I had to shoot our presentation night and decided to use the 400mm F2.8 so that I would not be in the way. Anyway, hate using flash in these situations because it is distracting to others so natural light all the way. Part way through they had to show a video so out went the lights and across the hall from me was the guy who was running the presentation for the video display and as he sat there in near total darkness only being lit from the light of his laptop screen I thought how cool does that look. Well this is the result, 1/25th of a second 3200 ISO F3.5 with a 400mm, yup have to love IS and the practice I have put in to handling this baby whilst it is on the monopd.

Great capture and composition! IS works wonders in low light especially if the person isn't moving too much

I don't like normally too much empty space around the subject, but I must admit it works very well in this case. The reason maybe perhaps you applied the rule of thirds? At any rate, it's a nice portrait for you captured the intense concentration and a thoughtful expression.
