What a day of fun and sun at cockatoo island  I can't believe its free to get into that place!

That machine shop is just incredible, the size of those lathes and presses are just something else..

I am sure there is gonna be a whole lot of great images turning up in the next few days, here is a selection of what took my fancy on the day...

(rather than dilute it out into two threads, I have included 5 images in this one thread - i hope thats not a pain for anyone.)

All these are great, but I love the second shot.
I really like the two halves look it has. The left hand side is all grey with little detail while the right hand side is colourful with all the detail in the control panel (or is it something else?).

Is there some sort of effect on the second and fourth shots?

Gerry, Even though I haven't the fascination you have with machines, I like the 2# and last. As wink has commented, there is a great divide between the simple and complicated. The last one is ideal for HDR although I wonder what would happen if you toned down the colors and brightness and make it look a little ominous.

Wink wrote:Is there some sort of effect on the second and fourth shots?

'They are HDR but Gerry has toned it down a bit so not so obvious.

#2 is my favourite here!! well done, i have never been a fan of such strong angles, but i loved it, it has such an aged look to it, which compliments the setting / history. well done!

3 images bracketed apart and merged into a HDR image

I really like the two halves look it has

yeah i was trying to get to main parts to the image, the electrical relay box and the wash sink, I think the overall angle and composition is slightly off but it was the best i could do at the time :cough:

i have never been a fan of such strong angles

I try and use it when I am attempting to get more in the picture that just what will fit into a stock landscape or portrait image, however plenty of them go left of centre (inlcuding my ones) so I can appreciate why people are not big fans of them

ta for comments

I quite like the first, but is it just me or is there a slight camera shake? The conversion and grain hide it well though.

The other stand out for me is #2 as well, great use of HDR and not overcooked either.

Gerry - the two HDR shots are great - well executed and not too OTT

I am with the above, the second shot is the winner.
The issue I have with the first picture is that it has
the bottom part cut off halfway through the writing;
while the lever/shaft cuts the image in half giving me
the impression I am not seeing the complete image.
Am I making any sense?

Ok, I go against the tide and say that for me #1 wins - by a landslide. I just love it. I do wonder what it had looked like if the words "SPINDLE" and "SLIDE" had been in focus, but I find it very pleasing as it is. It looks like pushed Tech Pan.

Cheers
Steffen.

yes! in hindsight the portrait choice would have been a better one...good pickup

words "SPINDLE" and "SLIDE" had been in focus

no excuse there, i should have put it on the tripod and ramped up the aperture, at the time I was looking to isolate a single word, but did not quite get there..

thanks for the CC, made me think more about the images
