How tough is a cat?

The picture below is of one of our cats named Stoli - He's a russian blue (no, seriously).
Stoli isn't normally allowed outside (His mummy says he's "special") but about three months ago he got out and managed to get hit by a car.
He fractured his pelvis in 5 places and had quite a lot of internal injuries which caused bleeding into various places including his kidneys, yet still managed to drag himself home and collapse on the doormat.
We took him to the vet and he was very close to being put down. The vet suggested we wait a few days (with him on meds) to see how things progressed. Fortunately, the internal bleeding stopped but his kidneys were playing up for a few more days - they did settle down eventually and he is now on the road to recovery.
Three months down the track he can now run, and the hair is starting to grow back in the parts they shaved.
