Bird over Spirit and the Pope's Eye

While on a dolphin cruse in Port Philip Bay last week I took some photographs of the Spirit of Tasmania as it passed towards Bass Straight. We happened to be at a man-made rock structure called the "Pope's Eye", which provided an interesting foreground. I snapped two photos of a bird serendipitously in flight "over" the large ferry. Although I've cropped them quite differently, I'm not sure which is best.

Also, I'm not happy with the dull colours from the hazy day. Feel free to have a play with processing either image, or simply suggest an idea I could try.

both very nice shots and the bird in the frame really adds to the scene...the second shot would be the pick of the two for me...

I would look at adjusting the contrast, this might help cut thru some of the haze, unfortunately due to the overcast day and the location there are not alot of colours - that said quite possibly a BW conversion might be in order...if you post a link to a larger res jpeg I would happily have a crack, the web versions are a bit hard to work with...

Why not go for a white border?

Both work, but I prefer #1

Did you see any dolphins?

Not to mention a gaggle of dive boats at Pope's Eye? Very popular site for the final dive of an OW course. The fish love banana's.

Sadly I didn't shoot these in raw (which would certainly have given me a little more room to play), but I'm now sharing the full-size jpgs at

I like this quite a lot. I usually have in mind that "photos look best on black", which probably stops me trying other colours when playing with presentation. You've reminded me to be more open-minded in this area.

Yes, we had quite a good time with a pod of dolphins. Probably the best shot was captured by my friend: the Queenscliff-Sorento catamaran ferry went past, and he got an image of dolphins simultaneously jumping out of the bow-wave on each hull. Synchronised swimming!
