I am looking for some CC for a few images taken the Cockatoo island model shoot - this is the first time I have done anything lie this and I whilst I did try and not break all those golden rules (like ladders thru heads etc) I am sure there was plenty I missed.

I would love to get some feedback on possible processing as well, not to mention composition

Good work Gerry... good balance between the ambient light and subject light... Nikon CLS is a dream isn't it :-)

C&C???

I'd probably tilt
- the first one 1-2 degrees clockwise - (CW)
- the second one 2-3 degrees ACW

I hope you learnt something today... or at least enjoyed yourself :-)

Nicely done Gerry. Who was directing the models?

#1 the lighting is 'hard' to decipher. Are you using a hard key AND a hard hair light ? I like this effect and you have done well to keep the flare off. Positioning another SB900 outside the window would have seperated the models hair from the background even more. :P [Just kidding...as if you didn't have enough flash already]

#2 you must have the softbox/umbrella coming from high on the left but I would like to see that in the model's eyes. The small preflash is not flattering on the pupils.

#4 needs a little more fill. Perhaps the shutter at 1/30th with your IS.

Dude these are brilliant! I am sure anyone who sees these would want to hire you to shoot their portraits for their portfolios! Well done. PS: Have you put in an order for your SB900 yet?

I ain't known anything else, but yes, seeing the issues canon people have..i am very glad nikon have it down pat.

will do, they do look a little slanted on a second look.

Who was directing the models?

basically whoever was taking the photos got to direct, however working with these girls was quite good since they did not need alot of prompting to assuming a decent pose, I think some more directing to get a themed frame (as mentioned by wendell in the other thread) would have great, however I mainly concentrated on ensuring they were looking where I wanted, one thing at a time for me

exposed for the window with a SB900 (i think) under a softbox up high right.

#2 you must have the softbox/umbrella coming from high on the left but I would like to see that in the model's eyes. The small preflash is not flattering on the pupils.

the softbox was from the left but also sort of direct on, the reflection in the eyes must be from the softbox, I had the trigger flash dialled to '--' so it should not contribute to the image.

#4 needs a little more fill. Perhaps the shutter at 1/30th with your IS.

I will track down one that had an additional light source, a gelled one at that

PS: Have you put in an order for your SB900 yet?

should do...but they are pricey.. :cough:

Dude these are brilliant!

thanks bro.

i see a budding Helmut Newton

ohh.. don't search for that one google when at work

but yes I can see the similiarities - i like it!

as you mentioned, a theme with 2 models works better than having them stand there - I think thats why I like this image too!

ta Wendell - one day I am gonna hit you up to carry your bags on one of your model shoots!

It was an SB-800 and the softbox must have been over your right shoulder to light the front of the lathe... At that time, I think there was also another bare SB-800 sitting on the window sill to the right of the models, which accounts for the bright lighting on their RHS...

ahh yes, i remember dialling that one off after awhile, good pickup.

over your right shoulder

thats probably more descriptive and easier to visual than 'high right'

Although if I was seeing this sort of scenery through my viewfinder, I would be rightfully high.

surprisingly enough I found myself not even realising how beautiful the ladies were since I was concentrating so hard on tryiny to get a decent image! But looking back on the images, the young ladies are great   Hats off to the MUA too, she did an awesome job.
