Lani was stunning and very easy to work with which was pretty lucky for me as this was my first ever portrait shoot

any way ... i made lots of mistakes and these are the best of the shots so feel free to pick my compositional skills and lighting to pieces

used my Pentax K7 with a 50/1.7 and wireless flash all hand held.

This is a bit different for you Shane.
Not being a portrait taker myself..............
I think #2 would have been stronger with some laughter and no pipe in the bg.
She looks over dressed for the lonely sad feel to her in #1, If she looked happy in this one it would be great.
#3 seems to be the strongest out of this set.
I just dont know about #4.

Great to see you exploring without the 4WD Shane.
I disagree with Colin about #1. I think it's great. Makes me wonder about the backstory.
Was she jilted? Stood up? etc

#2 Agree with Colin about the pipe (and the drain!). If only she was about 10cm to her left! Happy with the expression though

#3 :agree:

#4 Suits the mood. Love it.

Only issue I have with all of them is the highlight either side of the bridge of her nose. It may be what she looks like, or it may be a flash catch light on some shiny skin. Either way, I find it distracting from otherwise great shots. But hey I'm no portrait shooter.

I like 2 & 4 best. I think is because Lani is looking
at the casual observer straight to the eyes with a
glint in her eyes making the portrait stronger.
The first one has sad undertones... and the third
one is something about the position of Lani's head
in relation to the camera that doesn't convince me.

I like #2 the best of these Shane - due to the lighting.

Well thats how we learn! :)

I actually like them all.. although the third is just a tad dark for my taste.. I'd add a little curves to her face in the first just to show a bit more detail but apart from that I do like them and think you've done really well!! :)
