2x2 Kuringai

Well I had a lot of failures this time round.
If I was driving, I'd say it was the faulty nut behind the wheel
As it is, I guess it was the faulty processor behind the viewfinder.
Still here are a few that I felt were worth recovering...

An orchid...

A sundew...

These were in flower, but I was more taken by the carnivorous parts.

And another one (different type). I'm sure Colin will explain far better than I could.

I reckon that orchid is a winner, with a little extra PP to get some more light from the shadows I think its a winner  , the composition is quite nice, and it is actually alot harder than it looks to get a good composition on these tiny flowers...was this cropped at all?

on the second I think a crop is in order, portrait style taking away the top and sides of teh image..

Yes the orchid was cropped.
As for lightening the background, I actually went the other way to get some detail in the orchid itself. It was very close to blown.
Am away from my computer. Will post an OOC version when I get a chance.

Will try the crop on #2 too.

I agree that a blackish background to bring out more definition and 3D quality to the orchids.

#3 is too 2D for my liking. Perhaps a side lighting scheme?

fair call and probably the right choice, looking at the few orchid shot I have and the flowery bit (the thing in teh middle, the stylus?) is nicely exposed but the white petals are blown...

what about usign the 'colour control point' in NX2 to get some local detail out of the flower shadows? mainly to separate it from the darker BG.

Something new to work out how to do :?
Will look into it.

The buggers WERE flat. This wasn't a studio shot you know

ANd the rework of #1 using colour control points to attempt to control the transition from background to plant. I used about 20 CCPs. Not convinced it got me anything.

ANd looking at it in preview, I think I oversharpened

I dunno. This version seems to me to be much more dynamic. Whether it's because it's a nudge sharper, but I think that the extra post that you've brought to this version has improved the saturation and depth.

I like this version best.

if so, it's marginal.

I prefer the last version of the orchid.

The third photo, second sundew (Drosera spatulata), looks like it is one that the D200 just can't handle. I used to get that all the time with my D70, certain colours would just not get captured correctly.

Your final orchid shot is a good result considering what you had to work with

Fair nuf. I was thinking more of CLS.

:agree: with the others re: edited Orchid. It's improved the shot in general.
