Stubbsy's Caves Pics Pt 1

The first of my Jenolan Caves pics have come out of the PP factory!

I hate to say it, but I wish I had a tripod and an SB800. I had way too many blurry shots and way too much noise in my pics. Shots are with 12-24 Dx and 24-120 VR lenses. I used a monopod for the bulk of the shots, but needed tripod stability. Shot at ISO 1000 to get the light, but needed flash more and lower ISO.

Samples below. Rest are in my smugmug gallery. To see a large version of a thumbnail below, click the pic.

Those caves look awesome... The first one gives me a good indication of the size... The second is great with the reflection in the water...

Nice images. Tricky subjects. Birdies 10.5mm would have been interesting?

Stubbsy - I really love the third one - the foreground lighting really works, and brings you into the shot. I think this is better than mine of a similar view, so will have to go back to the PP-line and see what I can do

Don't beat yourself up over not using a tripod. I was only using mine about half the time. I reckon about 80% of the tripod shots are keepers, and about 50% of the handheld ones are. Not really all that much difference, although the tripod ones are probably more demanding pics :)

And besides which, the tripod got bloody heavy by the end of the day!!!

I know all of you had lot of fun in the caves and it was the big workshop with lot of assorted lighting sources + lot of subjects to shoot.

Just my questions:

- pretend you don't have tripod/ monpod and no flash, not on board flash either, handholding techniques only, can you capture those amazed images with the WA fast lenses as 14/2.8, 16/2.8, 28/1.4 or 10.5 FE/ 2.8 ant the two last with longer focal lenght:50/1.4 and 105DC/f.2

- Will these above lenses cover all the required range in the caves?

- Using flash techniques: rear, front, multi flashes in remotely?

- If you have another opportunity to go back and shooting inside the caves, what lens or equipment you'll bring along with you all day in comfy?
