I think I'm slowly getting better at this - practice (hopefully) makes slightly better

All shot with the 50mm 1.4 at F/2.0

I was sitting next to a Herald tog who shoots lots of sports and he was commenting on how much harder it is than say, rugby (of any kind).

Anyhoo... Would love to hear your thoughts on these.

Dude these are awesome! Clean, sharp, well exposed and exciting 'action shots'.

Nice and sharp - but quite grainy. Was your ISO pushed up nice and high?

ISO 1600 for all but I haven't run them through any NR software. I need to give hoise ninja a try to see whether it can clean them up.

Great action shots David, at the end of the day even if the images are bit noisy, who cares, its the composition that will be the winner and that is something here that has improved over the last batch.

On the first it looks you may have just missed the focus, the foot at the back is very sharp but gets softer towards the face - howeve rits hard to tell on the low res version - nonetheless I am merely nitpicking there!

I am trying to do a few footy matches for something different and I have found the images which seem to have the stronger composition are ones with the atheletes face clearly in the frame, this gives the viewer a direct engagement with the shot. I have found that its often luck of the draw if you are stationary at the location, you have to wait until teh action comes to your corner or side.

anyway, thru that rambling what I am saying is the first image is the one I like and is a winner!

These are much better than your previous attempt and I am glad to see you have taken the advice of using the 50mm.

Great action shots, every time you post these they go up a notch.

I can imagine that this is a tough gig!

Thanks guys. I agree with Gerry re the face in shot - it does make a big difference.

Thanks for the advice V - It did help to shoot at F/2 which got the shutter speed up. I missed a lot of shots but the keeper rate is going up. I'm still getting used to the focusing system on the 7D (And using the AF-on focus method) so I think that once I get better at that things should improve even more.
