Bad Moon Rising

Postby Bob G on Mon Jun 28, 2010 7:46 pm

Last Saturday night the Full Moon Rise and Sunset were within 10 minutes or so of each other so I calculated a point along Alexander Parade where I could get the moon rising beside the Point Cartwright Lighthouse.

I didn't have a lot of time as we were heading out to dinner and a show with friends at 6.30.

Anyway there was cloud all over the place and I missed the best sunset of the year which I could see emerging behind me to the west.

This is what I got for my trouble.
Comments welcome:

Bob,

I like the basic image, and the concepts here. I'd like to see the contrast on the tower pulled back just a little, but at the same time, a little more contrast in the sky.

Wow that 500 makes the moon look fairytale big! This is great planning and execution from you part. Which software (if any) did you use to calculate the positions etc??

As Gary has mentioned, the lighthouse is trying to steal too much glory from the moon....
Have you tried a version where the sky is more contrasty and the lighthouse is in silhouette?

This was taken just around sunset so there was still quite a lot of very even light looking to the east. I should be able to recover a bit in the lighthouse which I lost when adding contrast. Did a little dodging and burning in the sky as well. Moon shots coming up in a club comp. later this year, so if I don't have better by then I'll rework this one along the lines suggested.

Calculation done with an ephemeris overlaid on a google map.

I like this photo, this huge moon behind the clouds looks menacing. What does it look like in colour?

I quite like this photo, but as it has already been said
the lighthouse is somewhat too prominent and takes
away from the moon, which should be the focal point.
