Around the Rocks

Well last night I had the privledge of taking a few work collengues including a blow in from the London office on a bit of a photo adventure around the Rocks and Observatory Hill. While I found it a little challenging at times helping them with their camera (3 different canon models just to make life confusing for me), I think we all got some shots we were happy with. I won't bore you with any of the cliched landscapes and views of the sunset and the bridge etc, but I thought I'd share two off the cuff strobist shots and two other random images from last nights shoot.

Found this creeping out between the pailings in one of the back lanes in the rocks (I may of overpumped the vignetting)


This ones a bit weird, I just liked the light being on, and the fairly dark and rustic backend of this house. (not sure I'm happy with the crop)


Olivia Strobist Style - this was actually candid I'd taken 10 shots of her while she was busy taking her own photos, then she finally turned around to see what I was doing (I was standing on a ledge with flash in hand probably 2.5 metres above her) just as she turned around and looked up the flash popped her straight in the eyes. Flash bare at 1/8


Last shot was a bit of a balancing act, I wanted the nice tones in the last remaining sunset, but was trying to get a nice even level of flash on the stone and bronze (without too much specular highlights). Flash with Diffusor @ 1/4




Hmmm looking at the preview it looks like forums are downsizing the pictures as then look slightly smaller on screen and there is a noticable loss of sharpness Anyone else noticing that ? The originals are 800 on the longest side

I really like #1 for it's simplicity and tones. The only niggle is a little soft plant. Perhaps it's sharper in the original?

#4 you have done really well to balance flash with ambient here. The middle ground is lost and most likely wouldn't have contributed anyway. Only suggestion would have been to light paint the tree after the light had faded even further.

Yes, I have noticed this to be an issue even when I post 780 pixel images. All my posts look significantly softer than original.

I like the first, it is an interesting image, but yes the vignette is a bit overdone and the plant can be sharper.

#2 does not do much for me, there seems to be a lack of a focal point, my eyes wonder around and dont find anything to focus on. Maybe a different crop may help.

#3 is very nice, if you can reign in the blown highlight on her face it would be perfect! Great stuff!
