Olympus E-PL1 images from yesterday (Sydney)

Working in the Big Smoke this week, took a quick stroll through the city yesterday before flying out to NZ tomorrow. Here's a few (unprocessed except for cropping) taken with the E-PL1 which is shaping up to be a very nice walk around camera with excellent image quality.

You should have yelled. Leigh and I were both at a Samsung launch at the MCA in the afternoon. Series 9000 tv: 52" odd, as thin as an iPad (I kid you not), 3D, dual tuners, and you can watch tv on your remote. Impressive, but so too was the price. These are in the "If you have to ask, then you can't afford it" class.

But I digress.

Had I known, We could have had a matched pair of E-PL1s to play with.

I'm thinking that maybe lose George St in the first. Or reshoot it with a cycle courier streaking in from the left, with a slow shutter speed.

Actually Gary I've been working unending 16 hr days and I caught a train into the city to clear my head, did a power walk from Town Hall to the Quay and back again, snapped a few pics and caught the train back to the 'burbs. I'm hoping if things work out I may sneak in for the 5th August get together. We'll see how things go.

When I get some time in QF club this afternoon I may muck around with the images. I'm pretty impressed with the little camera. Every man and his dog had a large DSLR at the Quay on Thursday with assorted lens and packpacks etc. It was nice to walk past them with a lightweight camera around my neck.

The image quality is very good, especially in low light, which is why I bought it. Many of the images I take are in dark-ish church halls etc and I can fire away at ISO 800-1000 and get a reasonable image.

As for weight, it's roughly the same as a small DSLR but much lighter. The lens unlocking function is a bit quirky but you get used to it. I would really like to try out a fast prime lens with this body but haven't come across one yet.

I think the EVILs are the way of the future. Maybe in 10-12 years everyone will be using them?

By that time, my disposable camera will take better ISO shots. I am assuming that the rate of innovation will continue of course.

There are a few nice fast primes around for these EVILs, and shoot me...but the Samsung NX10 + 30mm f/2 is the combination that is making me itch. I cant wait until a FX EVIL arrives!

Good guess! I travel overseas quite a lot and I have a hobby of trying out a lot of cameras. I wait for the right price, buy, get my GST back, use the camera for a few weeks/month, then sell on ebay. I invariably get my money back and sometimes make a profit. (However, I'm not selling my 5D, it's my workhorse.)

The LX3 is a wonderful camera but like G9, G10 etc that I've owned, still lags far behind the DSLR in low light which is where many of my shots are taken. I suppose it's all physics. When there is a Canon G17, FF, 15mp, clean to ISO 120,000, weighing 135gm and weathersealed with a tiny F1.2 lens, we'll all be happy!

Here's a few more snaps from NZ this week. They're not great photos but I wanted to demonstrate the capabilities of the E-PL1 sensor, for those who might be interested. Whatever processing the little camera does to its jpgs, it's very good.

In similar vein to a FF sensor, there seems to be good subject isolation from the background, even though the kit lens is not all that fast.


The flash is weak but useable. It also can be tilted for bouncing off something which is cool.
