I am probably using this lens all wrong since I'm still not used to the very shallow DOF @ 2.8, but personally when I take shots like this one I feel I need to have that little chat with the Chief Financial Officer (aka my wife). I currently have a very good mate who lets me borrow his lens whenever I need it for a shoot (bless him), but it is powerfully addictive.

yep, there is no doubt about it, the 24-70 is a premo lens, I am in teh same basket as you, have borrowed and unfortunately realised what a gem it is - its also a really great focal length on the DX system!

I'm lucky enough to own a copy....it is a beautiful lens...if you can get the ok to grab one then you will probably never leave home without it.

I'm almost embarrassed when I use it, because it doesn't actually seem to need me at all. I feel like it just shoves me aside and takes over. Personally (not being a professional), I'm usually happy with my blue collar 18-200 VR 3.5/5.6, which typically behaves very well in my amateur judgment (here and here), but using the 24-70/2.8 again yesterday (not this shot), had me running to the 'For sale' section of this forum today (and lo and behold, I find a couple of them for sale). For the kind of work I usually do (kindy shots), it's perfect.

Thanks. It's crazy what this lens does to the background at 2.8, so soft and creamy. She wasn't in trouble, she's just typically serious, and usually looks like that (a surprisingly grave little bub, and I'm always delighted when I can get her to laugh).

I am not sure if "all the other boys have one!" is a valid argument....but "it is perfect for my work" is!

on the other hand...just don't tell her...

If you take out $50 every 2 weeks from your account and out and put it under your mattress, you will be able to buy the lens in about 2 years. No one will need to know where you got the money.

Just make sure you make the bed and there is nothing else underneath your mattress.

Looks like you are using the lens extremly well - really love the expression ... suggest you stay friends with the owner then offer him a fair price for his second hand

I doubt the value of this lens would decrease much though. Good thought however. I would still put those $50 away each week or so. You are going to need lots of it...

Thanks, I appreciate it. Actually you have given me a very good idea. When he lent it to me last Saturday, he apologized that the zoom ring is actually very stiff these days, as a result of a couple of unfortunate falls. He has had the lens for a couple of years, and it has traveled internationally a few times, so that's probably to be expected.

The glass on the other hand is absolutely flawless, and the AFS is perfect (I cannot get over the speed). I found that the zoom lens does stick when you wind it out from around 40mm onwards, but once you're aware of it there's no real issue (you just make sure you put plenty of wrist into the action). Reviewing this photo from Saturday (pretty raw, needs a white balance and exposure tweak), I may seriously make him an offer so he can either replace his with a new lens, or upgrade (if that's even possible from this lens).

Well my friend is hardly going to be interested in a Canon lens anyway.

Probably one of the reasons why I went for the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 over the Nikon - the price was, and still is, crazy!

I couldn't tell much difference between the two, apart from the Nikon being slightly faster AF in low light, but not $1000 worth!

Now you have me thinking the way my wife wants me thinking. I hear the non-HSM version has a noisier and slower motor which irritates some 'togs, but it's probably no louder and slower than my 18-200/3.5-5.6.
