Hi Macus,

a great and very sharp action picture.
I like the DOF and that the ball is slightly above the ground.
I also like the colours.
I guess you are very happy with to 70-200 VR
What were your settings ?
What type of focussing were you using ?

Cheers

Neither of them!! They both fell over each other upon reaching the ball and the goalie just walked over and picked it up!

All the parents laughed and clapped at the same time.

Guess I needed a video to capture all that.

Ahh the joys of under 7's soccer.

I think it should be titled "walking on Air" It is great how you have both the players with theit feet off the ground and also managed to get the ball off the ground as well!!!!
Nice action shot. If I had to get picky the branch from the tree in the BG could be cropped or cloned out.. But that really is getting picky...

Hi Cristiand,
f/3.5
1/1600
AF-C
this info will answer your question but I have found it is too hard to stuff around manually (in good lighting) under quick shooting circumstances. I find I get better results when taking lots of pics (once again....in good lighting) if I use the sports mode (little man running on your mode dial) or that's what I call it!
This mode will automatically put you into AF-C rather than AF-S and help to capture those point and shoot moments. AF-C will track your moving subject better than AF-S.That being said I am using an excellent lens which also helps.
I have tried to shoot in total manual mode but found I was spending way too much time adjusting settings rather that shooting action. Sport photography has to be instantanious and I will now use this mode for all my sports shots. I have only come to this conclusion through trial and error over the last month.
All my shots in this mode have been hand held with the 70-200 VR and I have a monopod but as yet really don't think I need to use it. Once again I think that would only be in good lighting

Mal, or maybe "Air Walk"..........I now see what you mean about the branch. Ahh hindsight.

This is a very good action shot - there is tension between the players competing for the ball, the action has been stopped perfectly, there is little distracting background.

Do you think that a tighter crop gives it more "oomph"?

Brilliant pic, Marcus! For some reason I cannot view the original, so I am going by the cropped version Cricketfan has done.

I think it is a terrific action shot captured perfectly!

Outstanding shot Marcus. Thank you for posting it. If nothing else, it's a great ad for the 70-200VR (like it needs more good publicity!!) and for the Sports Mode. I take your point about fiddling around with Manual Mode when things are happening fast around you. I shoot in Manual 95% of the time but flick to Sports mode when photographing subjects like birds in flight.

Thanks to all for your thoughts and comments. Yes, I prefer the cropped version too.
