Ektar Portraits

Got a thin skin? Then look elsewhere. Post a link to an image that you've made, and invite others to offer their critiques. Honesty is encouraged, but please be positive in your constructive criticism. Flaming and just plain nastiness will not be tolerated. Please note that this is not an area for you to showcase your images, nor is this a place for you to show-off where you have been. This is an area for you to post images so that you may share with us a technique that you have mastered, or are trying to master. Typically, no more than about four images should be posted in any one post or thread, and the maximum size of any side of any image should not exceed 950 px.

Please note that image critiquing is a matter of give and take: if you post images for critique, and you then expect to receive criticism, then it is also reasonable, fair and appropriate that, in return, you post your critique of the images of other members here as a matter of courtesy. So please do offer your critique of the images of others; your opinion is important, and will help everyone here enjoy their visit to far greater extent.

Also please note that, unless you state something to the contrary, other members might attempt to repost your image with their own post processing applied. We see this as an acceptable form of critique, but should you prefer that others not modify your work, this is perfectly ok, and you should state this, either within your post, or within your signature.

Images posted here should conform with the general forum guidelines. Image sizes should not exceed 950 pixels along the largest side (height or width) and typically no more than four images per post or thread.

Please also ensure that you have a meaningful location included in your profile. Please refer to the FAQ for details of what "meaningful" is.

Ektar Portraits

I have been shooting a bit of film recently and at the AW meet I managed to fire off a few portraits of some of the attendees. These were taken with Kodak Ektar 100 with my FM2N and AI Nikkor 135mm f/2.8 (thanks Geoff M. I love this lens) and then scanned with an Epson V700. Colours have been adjusted using CS2 and OnOne PhotoTune, before being resized using OnOne Genuine Fractals.

I dont have a calibrated monitor :oops: so any tips about colour will be greatly appreciated. Portraits are not a strong point for me so please help me out as much as you can.

Lovely bokeh and nice photos.

I wasn't there and so have no knowledge of the lighting. But the skin tones appear a bit on the red side - particularly the first image.

My monitor is calibrated.

Thanks Trevor. I was having problems with the film scans coming off with a blue/blue-green cast, I always seem to get this regardless if I do it myself on the V700 at work or I get them done at Vision Image Labs (Frontier system) regardless of film type. I really do need to get this screen calibrated.

Man I've dusted off my old film SLR and am dying to get out with my 50/1.8, and these images aren't helping haha.

The tiny pieces of the hats missing in #2 and #3 are the only thing irking me.
I noticed the skin tones here too just to let u know.
Sony a300 - 18mm-70mm f/3.5-5.6, 55mm-200mm f/4-5.6 & tripod

Olympus OM10 - Zuiko 50mm f/1.8, Sigma 50mm Macro (1:2.8) f/2.8, Zuiko 100mm-200mm f/4 & T20 Flash

Dont ask to edit, just do it!

Eric...get out there and shoot some film!!! I should have gotten off my arse to compose these so I didnt lose the hat edges :oops:

Thanks for confirming I suck at adjusting skin tones....I had a lot of trouble with it

You are welcome to borrow my spyder to see whether a basics calibration can help your problem. :wink:

These are pretty nice candids.

I can see the greenish thing on my laptop which is not perfectly calibrated.

Next attempt I would suggest to show the connection between people. I reckon candids become stronger that way. I would be eagerly watching for any ideas by MattK. :wink:

sounds like somethign I took on saturday night :rotfl2:

nonetheless, this stuff works nicely in these portraits, the lens combo also just rocks, the bokeh in the foreground and background of MattK is to die for!

The reddish skin tone on MattK is a bit on the heavy side, I can vouch for that since I was sitting right next to him!
