Tides of TemptationThis weekend has been high tide for the sun rise and set. Adverse weather etc prevented our usual venture on a Saturday morning. Also 33% of the team was not in town. What a great day it was to sleep in!!
However, I was curious to see what the Coogee Ross Memorial pool would have to offer on a high tide evening. Fortunately there was no wind and the temperature was very human friendly!! Unfortunately those dirty halogens were shining full blast. They are a pain to remove in post...... I only fired about 30 shots before the light disappeared. Will be returning for sure. This place would be good during the sunrise + high tide (~1.2m) lowish swell. As usual for your C&C. Last edited by surenj on Mon Sep 06, 2010 1:59 am, edited 1 time in total.

My photography is still developing. Don't be so negative! http://www.photomarcs.com
Re: Tides of TemptationLovely surrealism. Not too sure about the bright city lights in the second image though.

Re: Tides of TemptationVery nice.
I like the tonal range in the mono though a bit more detail in the sky might help. I think the first one improves if you crop out the building and bring the bottom up to make it balance.
Re: Tides of Temptation
funny that, I actually went out on Saturday night up teh coast hoping for a colourful sunset - great minds think alike eh!? I like the first image better from an exposure point of view, however I prefer the second from a composition point of view. You were probably hard up against the rock, but I would like to see the rock line/water line interesect the bottom left hand corner, that I reckon would really create a nice set of thirds and a nice diagonal line - All easy from where I am sitting of course You have done very well with teh WB of teh image, as mentioned there is a crazy yellow street light there and you can't even tell from your image. gerry's photography journey
No amount of processing will fix bad composition - trust me i have tried.
Re: Tides of TemptationThanks to everyone who commented!
This one I think may have been a large metal hunk with lights etc that somehow manage to fly!. Good guess though.
I thought I'd leave them in because I darkened the sky etc... I will try and see whether it will work without them.
I tried to deliberately darkening the sky the draw attention to the pool but will also give this a go. The sky wasn't very strong though... Skippy didn't show any clouds but he was wrong this time. Here is the pano crop you suggested.
It required a few layers (few more scrapped) and finally a desperate desat with multiple blends etc.. grrr.
What I liked about this and couldn't get over was the little person looking over the ledge on the upper right side. There was a couple sitting there who were still for ages. I took them for granted but they moved away before I found a better compo! This was taken when the exposure was easier.
This lacks the person for scale I guess. It was only a few minutes later but was much harder to balance the sky etc.
I've pretty much given up on colorful. I reckon one of these days we will hit jackpot. Just make sure that your filters are clean and batteries are charged at all times.
Re: Tides of Temptation
Interesting. I think the sky is no a bit too light. It makes you look past the foreground at the sky which is not as good. A delicate balance. Perhaps two-thirds of the way back to the original black. Actually that's not the crop I had in mind. It works in its own way but I think you'd need to tone the building back. What I had in mind was specifically for the colour version (ie retaining the colour). First crop it in to remove the building altogether but leaving the lone observer and the rail below and in front of him. Leave the sky but crop up the foreground by about the same amount that you have done. It then becomes quite a different image; simple, mysterious and sculptural.
