Portraits by Alex

I am really impressed with the way Alex is able to hold the D200 with 50 with SB800. Using the flash is easier for exposure as I can dial up the shutter speed for him.

This is one of his (ignore the goofy subject on the right) - no cropping, just a little PP. This was taken using the Ilford FP4 compact flash card that Gary was selling on here a couple of years ago, hence the B&W.

Alex loves taking photos and may look at getting him a D70 or something at Christmas.

I haven't been game to let him use the 17-35 or 85 yet. :D

Patrick,

A couple of points of order.

I presume you have his approval to post this image here? :)

Not bad given the use-by date on the card you purchased. How does Alex deal with the chems in the processing of the images?

In all seriousness, this is a very nice image. I can only suggest that you do everything that you can to encourage Alex to become involved in this wonderful pasttime we all share and enjoy.

I presume that you're looking at the D70 for compatibility and pricing?

Otherwise, I'd be inclined to suggest a Sony NEX 3 or 5, not simply because it's good, but being smaller and lighter, it might be easier for the smaller hands to deal with.

Thanks for sharing this.

I will hold all proceeds from his image sales on trust for him (very shakey trust, that is)

I very much want to encourage him. The D70 is suggested for:

1. Cheapness - I can't assume a 3.5 year old will continuously treat a camera well;
2. Compatibility with existing lenses;
3. My preference for teaching him to use the viewfinder. Possibly no real logical reason for this if DSLRs of the future increasingly provide viable live-view, but still. If he is going to use the Bronnie... :biglaugh:

I can't begin to tell you how reassuring that is to hear. :)

A very good point, and one which I had overlooked.

On the subject of viable live view, we were using one of the new Samsungs at lunch on Sunday. The NX100, IIRC (it wasn't a Nikon, so details are of a lesser import).

I was very surprised at just how viable this camera's live view capabilities were. The image displayed no jitter, and using the super AMOLED, it was very bright with a usability angle way beyond my (un)reasonable expectations. With the camera pointed towards the subjects on my immediate left (a round table at a restaurant) I held the camera in front of me and was able to compose, focus and shoot, all with a viewing angle onto the display of something in excess of 60 degrees.

WOW.....

I was going to say that the FP4 card of yours must be going off.....it no longer looks like true FP4!!!

Another photo by Alex...a couple of adjustments in ACR to recover the blown bits, but otherwise, almost straight out of the camera.

You might not need to setup tripods for self portraits anymore. Finally you can also be in the decent family photos rather than being absent in every good family photo. ;).

Nicely done. Did he use fill flash?
