Gritty Portrait
Not really one for portraits, but gave it a go a couple of weekends ago. (Need to give a workout to my new 70-200mm VR II!)

i like the harsh lighting cos it suits what you are doing. not sure if you did a desat or thats just the muted colour, but i like that too. the leading eye is the one that needs to be in focus though imo. to me, no matyter how many times i try and tell myself the right eye is in focus, the leading left eye being OOF means to me the photo is OOF.

Ah, yeah. I agree. Still getting used to the very narrow DOF of the f/2.8. Desaturated a bit, yeah, and almost completely on the blue channel.

I would agree on the eyes.
Also the squinting seems to be due to the harsh sun? Was this deliberate? What feel were you going for with this portrait? It comes across as the person is annoyed.

Actually you can rescue the eye somewhat by moving the catchlight down and adding another for the right eye...

It was more of a *look outside, friend is in sun, take photo of friend* no planning or goal involved. Just a snap.
