My word, what have we done?!

I am not sure we have captured the true essence and intent of the sculpture artists, but hell it was a fun night out!

Following on from this thread http://www.dslrusers.com/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=39921&p=421277#p421277 Suren and I had an interesting night amoungst the sculptures by the sea. We also met up with some pro light painting peeps who made our stuff look like $2.99 christmas trees.. Nonetheless the most important thing we took away was the concept of trying to compilment the sculpture with another element, ie light painting rather than overpower it with crazy LEDS, cathodes and EL wire!

I am keen to get and do this again with the sculptures and would be more interested in just using a softbox and torch and trying to keep it simple. btw, they have some pretty cool pieces of artwork there! check the camel!










Suren, I reckon your EL wire is probably a more useful and more effective tool for this stuff and I reckon your images from last week are by far the best yet.

I'd argue that it's never really possible to capture the true essence and intent of sculptures in a photograph so itilising them in creating new art works is entirely appropriate.

art in itself... love what you have done in 2 and 4 - great idea and really effective

The OMG one was a great idea and it pulls together neatly IMO. It's nice and whimsical.

The light trails in #2 and #4 need to be more diffuse IMHO. I guess if we picked up on this at the time, we could have reduced the aperture or put a cellophane over the LED (which was super bright!)

#3 I didn't like the look of it when we were taking the pictures and I am still not convinced. I agree with the softbox for this one although the background lights will still be a pain... Next time maybe we should go real close with the ultra wide.

#5 I quite like. But need to make up my rookie mistake of holding the damn wire straight for a moment! The bright electricity suits the specular object really well! Also we need to lose that red cathode too. Simplicity is best.

Hmm... That was really annoying how I couldn't recreate that electricity look I got the first night. Then the damned wire decided to give out. I have had another look at my picture from the U shaped sculpture and can't remember how I created that effect. Perhaps keeping it more on the same spot and moving quickly rather than slowly....

Agreed. Although I don't know whether I can make it out there again! With the photowalk this (Entire) Saturday is going to be a write-off.
