A few from my current gig

Hi folks,

Just thought I'd post a few images from my current gig, AcrossOz, which is about half done. A six week on the road job, through the centre of the country and around the bottom bit. Anyways, enough of that, here are my 4 favourite images so far (excuse any colour issues, these are done on the road, uncalibrated).

Image

Life on Mars... well Shark Bay, W.A., Lens is the Sigma 12-24, each tent has a LED light inside. About a 10 second exposure after sunset. Image is to show adventure and the Blackwolf tents (sponsors) in use.

Image

Light painting near Uluru. This image needs to be tidied up in PS before final use, but the basics are there. No nicities light a lighbox or anything, simply a bare LED worklight and long exposure. Writing backwards in the air is a bugger!!

Image

Waiting to cross Coopers Creek, shot through the front wheel of a Suzuki DR. Off camera flash triggered by PW in lower left of image, just visible. About 1/8 power for fill. Image to show bikes, but also the tired rider.

Image

This is probably one of my favourite images from the trip so far. 30 second exposure at Uluru, fantastic light from the milky way and light painting with the LED light to illuminate the bike. Image to try and show the adventure and remoteness aspect of the ride. Requires final clean up in PS.

Well, they are my 4 favourite images just now, at least the ones I can think of. I'll post a 'journey' post once I finish up in about 3 weeks. Thanks for looking and feel free to comment.

What a job, someone has to do it!!
:D

I agree with you, the last shot is a cracker, but the third is not far behind, great portrait. I can see why you light painted the letters on your second shot but personally I think the photo would have been much better without them.

Alan,

These are all great, but to me, the last of them is the weakest. I think the bike is a bit overexposed, and to my eye it might probably have been better placed in the bottom rh corner. As you say, these haven't had much in the way of post, and so please take my comments on your WIP in context.

That said, I the first is brilliant, and should meet the sponsor's needs with room to spare, and the third is just a great composition and story, and executed to perfection.

Good stuff and looks like a great gig. The portrait of the rider is my pick... nicely framed and definitely portrays how hard the ride has been.

cheers

Hi Alan,

1 & 3 are the standouts both with great composition and originality.

In 4 it also seems like there are two shots, the sky being the first and the bike being the 2nd. Also maybe a bit more light on the front wheel would have help complete the picture of the bike.

Keep up the good work and enjoy the rest of the trip.

I like #1 and #3 for the same reasons already outlined.

It sounds like you have quite the gig for this one. I am sure it is hard work but at the same time I am sure you are having a blast as well!

#3 is a cracker. Would suit a two page spread with caption on the left upper!

#1 it would have been nicer to see more detail on the bikes which can be fixed in post.

I think its mostly all been said, however here is my 2c worth.

The first image is a great idea and the illumination of the tents makes it come alive, compositionally though, I think taking a hundred paces backawards and recomposing to that the curved lines of the beach lead up to the main subject (in this case the tents) and have them smack in the middle rather than down in one corner. As it stands I look at the tents then head for the sky, maybe also a tighter crop might draw the eye in and hold it?

confused as mud? anyway this crop and a bit of extra light on the bike side of the image makes come alive a bit more for me. I think your colours are all good - from my uncalibrated end. As usual, if you object to your images being edited or reposted let me know and I will remove it.

Great photos Raskill, especially the last.

One thing I have always wanted to do was a desert run on motorcycle. Not sure if it will ever happen.

Hi Mate
As all the previous folks have said these are great.
Hope the trip is going well .
Don't be shy and try and post some more ,so us mere mortals who have to keep the wheels of industry turning can get secondhand thrills from your excellent images.

Jeff

Thanks for all the feedback and comments folks, it's been a blast so far to say the least. (Image processing in a tent each night, and sleeping on a deflating air mattress is wearing thin though).

Exif info for the last shot is 12mm, 30 sec exposure, ISO 4000, F4.5. Bare LED worklight used to illuminate bike for about 3 seconds (quick light painting). I'm not happy with the bike just now, like Gary said, it's slightly overexposed, and will need to be fixed in post, but, it should turn out fine.

Gerry, no owrries editing the image, the bikes will be brought more out in the final copy also. We discussed it after the shot, and the client wanted the bikes more obvious, rather than just the tents, so it is an easy fix. :) Recomposong would have been difficult, I was half way up a beach dune, that was topped in dead dry timber, and only maybe 20 metres wide, so this was the only spot for the shot.

I have 8 weeks till image delivery after the final day, so y new monitors will be there waiting when I get back, and i'll have some final images to show you soon.

On a personal note, this site has done more for my photography than anywhere or any single person, so thanks folks!!
