A couple of pics from a random trip to Monarto yesterday. Just nice to get out in the fresh air again. CC & ideas welcome especially re thee use of flash to get catchlights. I recall Fozzie, Big V & co using it sparingly at certain times to make their images just that bit better on occasions.

  I could have got some XXX rated pics from the Chimps enclosure as they had just started 'Introducing' the newly arrived females chimps from Holland to the (pent up) local males . One keeper described it as 'Chimpasutra' and not suitable for young eyes!

Both nice shots, the first i really like due to the facial expression of the giraffe. Whats the colour version look like? any reason for the BW conversion?

Great shots and yes the flash has lifted the shadows and eyes , I like the B&W and quirky angle
Thanks for the heads up on the Chimps I'm off this week ..

thanks Deb. I actually did some dodge & burning to get detail into the eyes hence the enquiry so I can learn from the zoo masters such as yourself!
It's probably worth a call re the chimps as they will be keeping them enclosed behind glass until they know it is safe for them to mix socially in the open and not kill each other through over sexing (FWOABW) :cough:

I prefer the B/w - just seems to draw attention to the expression more .
Perhaps a chimp mini meet early December?

I am divided between the two versions but favour the color a little.

Where are these catch lights that you speak of? :?

I'm not sure that it would be a good idea to flash at the zoo. It may get the attention of the animals and could explain the expression of the giraffe but you might get attacked by mothers with children. I can understand why Fozzie, Big V and Co would do it sparingly.

I'm guessing one of the main reasons they only use it a little is because most of the animals at adelaide Zoo are behind wire fences, and the flash lights it up like a Christmas tree ... ruining the photo.

That was the purpose of my original post Surenj- but my late night terminology was muddled obviously.
"CC & ideas welcome especially re the use of flash to get catchlights" (= there are none in my pics so ideas welcome on how much flashis acceptable and what settings are used by experts such as Big V & Fozzie)

Clear as mud  .
