An Afternoon in the Park...

Two of my daughters and I decided to spend the afternoon in a park, taking photos of flowers in the streets nearby and playing on the equipment.

Feedback and critique welcomed please...

For the following shot we used a scrim (a large white translucent popout circle - part of a reflector kit) to soften the very harsh and bright afternoon sun and also used my Tamron 90mm Macro lens.

Image
NIKON D90 + 90.0 mm f/2.8 @ 90 mm, 1/320 sec at f / 3.5, ISO 200

Then switched to my 70-300mm lens and took some images playing on the equipment.

Image
NIKON D90 + 70.0-300.0 mm f/4.5-5.6 @ 260 mm, 1/250 sec at f / 6.3, ISO 200

A portrait in the very late afternoon (6PM) light.

1) nice shot, good control of the light with a modifier, nothing to add but maybe a slightly tighter crop?

2) picture of kid  nice, nothign I can add to improve it

3) nice shot showing a natural smile and expression, I think you could definitely improve the PP on this one. It looks flat

here's what I would have done - note, let me know if you want the image removed or object to your images being reworked.

I have cropped, adjusted d-lighting, contrast, u-control points and slight vignetting, if you want specifics just let me know.

The colours on the first one are very eye catching. I like the expression in number 2 and I think that biggerry's edit makes number 3 really pop, highlighting her eyes much more.

Thanks Gerry and nice PP (only wish my skills were up to the task). I don't tend to stray from Lightroom for any PP (I guess it's what I'm familiar with (and I'm lazy and take/have too many images to spend too much time on any one) - I just looked and all I touched was a little Clarity and Vibrance on that one so almost no change). I definitely like yours better (and agree it does lift it and make the eye's pop more).

Lucky to have such willing subject. The two portraits
are very well executed, but I prefer the edited version
of the the third. Perhaps you should follow biggerry's
advice and try on the first one as well.

OK I performed some minor edits in Lightroom only (which I'm at least somewhat familiar with) - certainly no U point control (Nik I believe?) however I did try some of what I interpreted as some of the equivalents of Gerry's ideas and...

too easy... looks better than my edit

Save that as a batch script and your done :)

FYI, the U-point control is a standard function in nikons Capture NX2

I could create a preset in LR however for a number of the mods I'd used the local adjustment brush (e.g. for raising the exposure a little on the left side of the face and for "brightening" the eyes) which is location specific :)

Yes I'd remembered you used Capture NX2 after I'd posted that. I've never used the Nikon software and whilst I know a number of you guys like using it (because it actually understands the as shot in camera picture controls, etc) now that I'm totally embedded in the Lightroom world (and that the Nikon pseudo equivalent Landscape, Portrait, Neutral, Standard (which I basically use by default) and Vivid) Camera Calibration Profiles exist and get used automatically on Import) I tend not to stray from LR for anything if I can help it.

Thanks again :)
