Of course there are fungi in the forest!

Just like Stubbsy cannot stay away from a church ..............I have a fungi habbit.
While up in the rain forest I could not help but find them all over the place.

Image
Nice glutinous stems on this little fellow (about 30mm tall)

Image
This one needs a brush (about 15mm across)

Image
The underside of this one reminded me of micro bat ears (largest about 18mm across)

All shot hand held with sb600 flash and the 105 macro. 200-250th of a second exposure and F29-32 apature.
Critique more than welcome as usual.

Critique is not required Colin, great work on these. I especially like the first closely followed by the last.

I love that first one Colin, that jelly stuff on teh stems is soooo cool - can you see these types at the Valley of teh Waters? cause I want one!

The last one is also very tidy - irrespective of any PP on this, the simple composition and negative space make it interesting and a winner for me. PP wise maybe just a bight of brightness on the reds.. and the stick, could be my monitor tho.

Wow - the first is fantastic and I really like the composition and shapes on the last.

Given that I have an SB600 and a 90mm macro I'd also like to try my hand at something like this as well :)

Did you use the flash directly on the camera or off camera (and did you use any sort of modifier)?

Very nice. The first one for me.

Providing they don't grow on you, it's fine.

Thanks all,
The flash has a soft diffuser on it and was mounted on the camera hot shoe.
Sorry Gerry this is the first time that I had come across this one so we may have to find what is there or go for another meet in a little patch of rainforest further up the hill after the waterfall meet, time permitting of course. Otherwise we could organise a fungi meet in Autumn/Winter to really find some cool stuff.
My monitor is not callibrated and I do tend to run a little on the dark side with most of my pics, there must be something in that.

The last one is great...the reds have been captured nicely.

ahh thats cool, I am sure you will point all the goodies on the valley walk!

I had a quick edit of your last image - just to bring out some more light in the branch and tried to get those reds to what I think they look like, in my head anyway :) Let me know if you want it removed. Its a cracker of a image imo, rivals the first!

I prefer Colins versions. Stark, bold....nice design elements. Whilst your version opens up extra detail I don't think it's detail we need to see....so then it become a distraction. My personal opinion only and I'm sure there are many others who will prefer the image that you've enhanced.

Colin
Your macro technique is exquisite! But then...you knew that.

thats cool Matt, it would be a boring world if we all liked the same stuff and its great to see discussion on what works and what doesn't

Discussion is the whole idea, how are we to learn and grow if not through critique?
Thanks Matt.
Interesting work on this Gerry, do you want to have a play with the original? I reckon your pp skills are more enhanced than mine. Just bring lappy or usb drive on Saturday.

I can only add one word to this collection, 'Stunning.'
