Maroubra sun-didn't-rise shootWe had a not so spectacular sunrise shoot this morning. The waves were putting on a show however.
I was struggling a little with inspiration today. For your C&C. Gerry really needs a flip screen LCD...
Re: Maroubra sun-didn't-rise shootEven though the sun didnt rise I had a good time. I do like the cool and contrasty processing that you have here Suren. I have taken a very different look though...

Or a more appropriate tripod for him I think these work the best of the ones posted. I particularly like #2 Greg
It's easy to be good... when there is nothing else to do
Re: Maroubra sun-didn't-rise shoot
I think that will do! I really like #3, but the horizon seems a bit off....must be an optical illusion though, I noticed you were using your inbuilt leveller! Cameron

Re: Maroubra sun-didn't-rise shootI like the monochrome - I might try that on some of mine as well.
#3 is probably my favourite - however I think the set works really well together (they've got a coherent look about them). D600, D7000, Nikon/Sigma/Tamron Lenses, Nikon Flashes, Sirui/Manfrotto/Benro Sticks

Re: Maroubra sun-didn't-rise shoot#1 and 2 for me
You've communicated the movement of the water nicely and the hunchback provides a sense of scale
Re: Maroubra sun-didn't-rise shootLOL! I have quite a few photos with the same hunchback!
Thanks John, I may have applied global corrections to this one. Might have to back off a bit.
Is it a bit of distortion? Yes I love that leveler as well as the grid that I display. Really practical tools. This is what the bodies should be about. NOT bar code readers like they introduced for the 7D.
Which is why it's great to have a few people turn up. It's great to see everyone else's interpretation of the same scene.
Re: Maroubra sun-didn't-rise shoot#2 for me, I personally like your treatment to it, Feels real and rough yet smooth I think you've captured what seems to be a cloudy day and rough see's beautifully in this shot. Being from the country I find this is what I've come to expect the coastal areas would look on a morning like you had! I just love the little light filtering through the sky on the left just above the horizon, IMO a quality shot i'd be proud of. I'd honestly love it to get printed! well done!

Re: Maroubra sun-didn't-rise shootSuren, I actually quite like the first image, and not cause there is stunning example of the male species in there! It actually works nicely as BW, I would however be interested in seeing the colour version and also a more contrasty BW. The more contrasty BW might not work though due to the large amounts of white - thinking out aloud here!
I also quite like the second image, even a tighter pano would work with this composition. The last two have a very nice feel and processing to them, Ithink you have nailed the water movement and shutter speed in these - on that note what was the shutter for these? the exif is stripped.
can I take that you guys will buy it for me
I prefer towering stud of a man..but I guess hunchback will do gerry's photography journey
No amount of processing will fix bad composition - trust me i have tried.
Re: Maroubra sun-didn't-rise shootThanks Kristen. The original scene was very low contrast, partly due to the salt spray on my glasses but also because it was somewhat hazy. These requied some global and local contrast adjustments.
Thanks Gerry for the suggestions. Here they are. Hmm... This was a jpeg shot by mistake. So not much latitude on it. BTW the shutter is 1.6 seconds apart from #1 which is 3.2 seconds. I was a little late or too early as I didn't have a remote and insisted on using the 2 second timer to prevent the wobblies. [Which I still get a little with my tripod] Last edited by surenj on Mon Feb 14, 2011 10:41 pm, edited 1 time in total.

I think I actually like the colour version better - it has quite an amount of drama to it. gerry's photography journey
