Cool wet week makes for Fungi

What else is there to do with a day off from chores when you have had a cool wet week?
Go find fungi and go macro thats what.


Blue Mycena about 6mm across


spine fungi about 60mm across


Pink Hygrocybe about 40mm

I was stoked to find the first two as I had been wanting to see them for ages. I only found the third for the first time last year. This area is just a haven for fungi.
Critique please.

Colin, you have me fired up for another round of fungi photography!

I love the first, I am a sucker for that green punchy OOF BG's and that colourful toadstool top just tops it off

I like that spine fungi, crazy looking stuff, looks like somethign you would see in Jenolan Caves!, pretty big too at 60mm!

I reckon the last one could benefit from some brown negative space did you crop this?

#1 is very pleasing with the color scheme you have chosen.
I wonder whether the compo would be improved with a touch mnore DOF and a slightly lower angle of view though.

I did crop it a little but not too much, there is room for more space that is for sure thanks.
Here is the non crop effort


60mm is not that big for these as they can get ot 500mm! I was happy just to find it.

I do have a couple of different angles for the little blue Suren I will see what I can do.
A bit dark but is this more like what you mean?

Colin - when we do Lane Cove national park do you know if we'll get much fungi/macro action there? (tried to talk Suren into getting the Tamron 90mm Macro yesterday for next time we go macro shooting )

The suggestion is for lane cove bushland park not the national park, and yes this is a particularly interesting place for fungi with several species named from there. I have never been there and would like to check it out.
There should be macro interest even if the fungi are hiding. There are bound to be some lichens and mosses.

... even better - I can walk there in like 5 to 10 minutes

I took my first ever shroom pic there about a year ago when walking along the bush tracks with my girls one day. This is handheld in very low light (ISO 3200 1/40sec @ f/7.1 on my D90!):



This is not really macro though - the shroom was about 4 inches across

These are really cool macro photos. Great eye for seeing them. I especially like the 2nd view of the blue one, although the 1st blue one was great (until I saw the 2nd )

I reckon you could almost go somewhere between the 2 shots of the purple ones. Maybe start with the square crop, and keep that height. Crop from the left hand side, closer to the mushroom (around the line of the vein/stem of the leaf at the bottom) and then add extra space on the right hand side. Perhaps you could also add a little more saturation to the colours in the purple one.

Well done though.

Wow....looks like I will have to take my 60mm up into the Mts with me this coming weekend (unfortunately playing tour guide to some relos)
