Today I went to Cathedral Rocks to get some images as there was massive surf and dark black clouds. Here are some sample images.

Was taken at 3pm but used a B+W 10 stop ND filter to get a 2 minute exposure.

The crew.

Massive Surf and dark clouds = great long exposure black and white conditions.

Cheers

Chris,

Great images.

In the three of the rocks, you have well utilised the available rocks to frame your images and create some points of focus and direct our eyes within the images.

In the photo of Jonathan and his buddy, while I like the use of depth of field in the foreground (and the background), I'm wondering if the image might be made stronger by cropping the foreground and turning this image into even more of a panoramic crop than it already is. There's a dark item just below Jonathan's bum; try using that as the location for the bottom edge of the image, and see where that takes you.

I agree with Gary about your composition of the rock & surf images, they are good, but do not show the 'massive' surf. Did you get any with a three or four second exposure that gave the surf some movement but also showed the size.

Thanks Gary, might try changing the framing of Jonathan.

Ummm for most of them I used my 10 stop ND but the first one as it was later in the afternoon (5pm) I had a 4 second exposure without the 10 stop ND but as you can see the surf motion is still washed out. I was thinking after I took them that I should have tried some lower shutter speeds to get some texture in the surf but the main reason I didn't was that I was using the cardboard ND Grad technique and if it was a shorter exposure it would be really hard to do (my lee grads haven't arrived yet).

Thanks for the feedback Craig

I quite like #3 (although for me I'd probably crop less than Gary at the bottom :)) and whilst I too like the rolling waves look I think it would only work with #1. The bigstopper in #2 and #4 are pretty much always going to reduce all the water to mist and of the two I like the last the best.

I prefer the gull shot and agree that a more pano crop would work.
