The first is great. I like how the bright green of the mantis is really lifted off the darker background, with the head and front claws sharp as a tack....its in those eyes!

thats cool, how did you get that leaf bit in focus all teh way to the bottom of the image! bizarre focus plane!

Thanks guys.
Gerry the angle of that leaf is deceptive, its actually facing the camera and is quite profoundly curved at both ends. It does look strange, i agree. I did try a version blurring it out but i didnt like it cos it looked fake.

ahh, i see now, the leaf is almost vertical (~60degrees)? that would explain it..
I like the first image more, a slight crop to give the head a bit more detail might help trap the viewer in imo.
