V8 Supercars: Winton

I've started in a new position since getting back from Darwin just before Easter and I've been flat out with hardly any time for photos or browsing this great site. Thankfully I managed to get a free weekend, so I headed up to Winton for the V8 Supercars on the weekend. Here's 4 of my favourites...

Adam , these are great!
Love the panning technique and the blur on the wheels.

Are you flexing your 100-400 here? Which focus mode did you use on your 7D?

Thanks guys.

I used both my 70-200mm and 100-400mm. The 100-400mm was used for 75% of the shots though.
After a few minutes testing I settled on a 200th of second for the shutter speed. I found I could get a reasonable amount of motion blur while still keeping the car sharp. I also switched to IS mode 2 on the lenses.

I used AI Servo all day. I was really impressed with it actually. It will track an oncoming car down the flat out straight no problems at all.

Was it with AF point expansion?

Umm... I'm going to have to go to the manual on this one.

Ok... I use AF point expansion (manual selection) C.Fn III -6.

That's the mode I always use.

these all have great angles on the cars - the panning tech. and shutter speed look pretty sweet to me.

The red in the first comes across a bit toffee apple red to me, however it could well have been like that in real life! What shutter speed did you use for teh first?

Gotta love how low those skirts are to the ground! I would love to see a shot with the brakes cooking and red. That would be awesome, only in teh right conditions though i suspect.

good luck with teh new job.

Thanks Gerry.

The first one is at a 400th.

The colour looks accurate to me from what I remember.

A 400th showed a little blur, but obviously it looks a lot nicer as the shutter speed gets slower.

To give you an idea the 2nd shot is at a 200th and the 4th shot is at a 160th.

You've captured the action in these. I really like #2 and #4 the most, they are brilliantly sharp, yet convey motion perfectly

Thanks guys.

I think my years of clay target shooting have been a great help with getting this panning technique down. It's the same thing really when you think about it. Swing along with a fast moving object and pull the trigger, or in this case, push the shutter button.
