Well the best subjects may be a little bit subjective Thanks to Cameron and his contacts, i picked up a very nice tidy 1.4TC which I gave a bit of work out the other morning. I am quite astounded at the quality of this converter, especially when compared to the 1.7TC, quite frankly, on my setup the 1.4TC sh$ts all over the the 1.7TC. The lens drops to a f5.6 but the contrasty nature is still there and the sharpness is (from i can anecdotally see) unchanged from the bare 300mm f4. The effective focal length is a bit more manageable imo too, 420mm is still easily handheld at 1/500 or 1/750 but for nice crisp stuff 1/1000 is a guarantee..  normally i would not sully my lens or camera with such a view from a deathstar aircraft, however this one is an exception  smash 8's   bokeh...can be ok depending on distance to subject..

I think that in the first of these images, that starboard wheel needs its wheel bearings greased.
I'm also amazed at how the Dash 8 can be flying, as the engine has clearly ceased to function, as evidenced by the stationary propeller.

Ahh. You have stumbled onto QANTAS's top secret research into antigravity propulsion. They are currently testing its effect on humans, hence its placement into a commercial aircraft. Someone is going to get their knuckles rapped though for failing to engage the stealth mode prop spin feature though.

I think I have the same set up as you. The D7000 with the 300f4 and the 1.4 are brilliant. I recall quite a few years ago that the 1.7 was put forth as the best tele for the 70-200. I found the 1.7 OK on my 70-200 but I was never blown away. The 1.4 on both the 70-200 and in particular the 300 f4 is just superb especially for small birds. I also have the kenko 1.4 which again, is not a patch on the Nikon 1.4 in my opinion. Most of the time I just leave it on my 300f4 and it is happy.

whilst the shutter speed is far to quick for these shots, one thing to bear in mind is the paddles on the smash 8s run pretty slow so you have to drop the shutter a fair way to get decent blur. Matt. I am finding this is my conclusion too, however obviously not on the 70-200 but on the 300, its ok but you need to work hard to ensure you get a sharp result and there is a marked drop in IQ not related to sharpness, ie contrast.
