Some recent shots from the Melbourne Zombie Shuffle 2011.

Great turnout on the day, literally tonnes and tonnes of zombies working their way down Swanston St.

Thanks for looking, welcome any feedback. The pace of the zombies was suprisingly quick (for zombies anyway), so angles and poses were difficult to predict.

I like the second (and the expression of the guy behind). Man the makeup and detail they go to is pretty impressive.

The first looks a little cool to me - although that probably suits the subjects :)

I actually looked at these pics late last night - went to bed and proceeded to have nightmares.

Subject matter - excellent

Technique - excellent

Observation - if you could defocus (in photoshop et al) the backgrounds even more to give absolute emphasis to the subject matter then I would class these pics as A+++

Thanks for the comments :)

The processing on quite a few of these included a reduction in colour saturation/vibrance, which I thought added to the mood and really helped the zombies look more ghoulish.

I did try a bit of postprocess de-focussing when going through this batch of photos, but didn't really want to spend time doing that for numerous photos. I might go back and redo some postprocessing with some of the favourites.

I think these are great too.
The one thing I would add to the previous comments:
In #1 I would be inclined to get rid of the guy with the iPad LHS. This turns it from a march of the living dead into a tourist event. and the guy RHS scratching his head looks out of place.

Greg,

Interesting comments, and I'm in two minds over this. I fully understand what you're saying, and why.

But taking a different perspective, this is, after all, a staged theatrical style of event, rather than an actual march of the living dead. Should it be recorded as a march, or as theatre? And if the latter, should the iPad be excluded anyway as it detracts from the theatre?

My inclination is that this is a sort of similar event to a charity fun-run in stature, at least as far as newsworthiness, currency, and the like goes, and while it would certainly be better to not have the iPad there, I don't think it needs to be excluded.

That said, I love the images, and they show the great work that these until recently living people put into this event. Great fun.

I commented on it mainly because it was pretty much the first thing I noticed in the image & as such felt that it distracted enormously from the overall image. Maybe its just my tech head background. As a piece of photojournalism, yes it certainly has a place there, but if this was intended as photojournalism, I would have preferred a wider field of view to better put the event into context. PS I forgot to say the head scratcher is in photo #3.

PPS thanks for the critique on my critique. It is a skill I am trying to learn.

Thanks for the insight. I must admit that I was totally focused on the subjects in the photos, and neglected to think about background distractions. I'll definitely take your advice and think more about backgrounds next time.
