Family Fun

Melbourne Cup day meant a BBQ with the family and since the weather was so great I decided to pack my camera bag with a few bits and pieces.

I spotted the kids trampoline and thought this would be a good opportunity to try out the wireless High Speed Sync feature of my PocketWizard flash triggers.

These were shot at 1000th sec...

Then I tried a few shallow DOF portraits of the newest addition to the family also using fill flash.

400th sec at f/4...

2500th sec at f/2...

Hi Adam - I really like the second of the trampoline shots (the legs look uncomfortably like they are in an impossible position tho :)).

The baby photos are very cute - that grass looks nice and I really like the sloping ground in the last with the baby nearly upright - very cool - that bright sky on the top right is possibly a distraction tho.

Love the trampoline shots, great idea and two crazy girls to help out there :rotfl2: clearly they did not read the under 5's only sticker

I like the bubba portraits, great DOF, a bit of processing and a bit of lens? The colours have a bit too much punch, however they are growing on me!

Thats some good looking baby fat there too! nothing worse than a skinny baby  She also looks quite happy.

On second look on the third image, the fill flash has worked a bit too well, the eyes jump out a bit too much, how about dialling back the brightness on and around teh eyes?

note: no 'tehs' :rotfl2:

Thanks Gerry. I'll revisit the images with your suggestions.

I only had the bare flash with me so that probably contributed to those highlights. I was using the flash on ETTL which worked great on the trampoline, but it got cranky for the baby shots. I'm thinking the white hat and black top was confusing it a little. I ended up having to dial in quite a bit of FEC. I need to start experimenting with manual flash.

The DOF is all from the lens. I used my 50mm f1.2 for those.

I must confess I like the second best because
it captures the expression and the action better
than the rest.

Lol! I'd agree with that. My sister got a little too into it I think.

I must say that the #4 has too little DOF where as #3 has just enough with a little context and color I guess. Those two red blobs add quite a bit to that portrait.

Adam, you are certainly getting into some nice technical shots with HSS etc. Nice illustration of midday shallow DOF possible with HSS flash.

So, you're going to be walking around at bus tops, approaching people and flashing them? :)

#2 of these for me. It's just a great capture.
