Silver Screen Vacation

Hi guys,

I managed to get out for a walk about with my camera in my new town in switzerland. I have a few photos from the day but wanted to share this one with you.

It's turning winter here in switzerland and around lunchtime the sun is very low in the sky but still powerful. Creates alot of glare and deep shadows. So I thought a black and white tour might be nice.

I went down to the lake and the sky was completely white, large reflections off the lake and I wanted to try to be able to take something useful using these conditions. I found it quite difficult, but playing with some post processing literally stumbled upon this for an image i took on the bridge.

I think it works. Reminds me of of old movies. That particular look the silver screen has. Somewhat nostalgic yet keeps something special.

Its a strange photo in the fact that you guys will feel tilted, like sliding off the image. But I straightened it and it lost something....for some reason the slight tilt sends you to the bird who is flapping its wings. So I left it like this.

What do you think? How does the image make you feel?

For me it feels like i'm reminiscing, but as if I was part of a scene in an old hollywood movie.

I've come back to this one a few times before commenting and each time, for me, that bird in motion detracts from the image. I'd have preferred all birds stationary. Of course it's that bird that mkes the image for you and your view is the most important

The processing, however, is spot on. And remember - horizons aren't always perfectly level.

I kind of agree with Peter, but I think it's because there are two photos in this image. If you split it right down the middle vertically then the moving bird becomes the main subject on the right hand side photo and the lone bird becomes the main subject in the photo on the left. Just my opinion anyway.

I have come back to this photo a lot too. I really like it.

I think the moving bird adds considerably to the image.

The only negative that I have is the vignette. I understand why it is there, but to my eye it looks a little contrived - perhaps the edge needs a bit more feathering. Small nitpick and purely my personal observation.

It is a wonderful image.

agree 100%. the motion of the bird makes the image for me. i also like how there is alot of motion blur as opposed to frozen in flight. gives me the feeling of it being windy and cold.

nitpick: the bar is not level.

i think its a brilliant shot.
