Commemorating Vaclav Havel
Posted: Sat Dec 24, 2011 9:16 pmNot sure if this was big news back in Australia, but it's huge here in Prague and Europe. The Czech Republic's first president, Vaclav Havel, passed away last Sunday and there have been memorial sites set up at significant landmarks around the city. There are a number of things why he was significant not only for the Czech Republic but for Europe as well, but mainly he lead the peaceful Velvet Revolution which saw Czechoslovakia gain independence from the Soviet Union (1989) and the division of Czech Republic and Slovakia (1993). A lot of things happened in Europe back in the late 80s and early 90s.
When he was voted in as President, he didn't want the role as he felt he wasn't qualified to be a country's leader - might be a lesson there for other leaders.
