Matt
I just love the light in that one of Philo.

Oh wow.
The first image is what I suppose the way a Nobel Prize laureate would like to be portrayed. The portrait of Philo absolutely nails it. The setup, the lighting, the tones, her pose – just sublime.
You're the man.
Cheers
Steffen.

Not a fan I the first. Looks like hes in the process of walking. The 2nd is absolutely superb in every way.

I'm afraid me too - like the second very much but not the first

Thanks guys! I got it...number 2....not number 1.
Curiously, I was trying something different in number 1 and it appeals to me as a high tech,
modern environmenal kind of portrait. I tried to make the space an element of the image. Back to the drawing board perhaps.

I think it's just the pose that puts me off Matt. Not necessarily the other elements. Perhaps if he was in a different position it wouldn't look so awkward.

I think in the first it is because I get a sense that everything seems to be falling slightly that I cant enagage enough with the subject, whilst the second is an absolute cracker. Very clever use of a background scene to enhance the portrait.

A pearler of a shot, is this taken with the X10?

I love the second however would prefer a more gentle transition from the darkness to the light on Philo.
I think the first works brilliantly apart from the slight lean to the right. The lighting works really well and the subject, composition and expression suits the image.

Matt,
I will chime in with #2. IMO perfect lighting on the subject sets it apart.

Camera aside, the second image appeals to me much more. The composition is stronger and the lighting more pleasing. The first image also feels a bit cold....WB issue?

Both are good, but the second is to
put it simply ... splendid.

I like #2 because it is hard to go past an actual pic of Philo
