On my way south for Xmas on Friday in unsettled, heavily overcast weather, low cloud was covering all but the highest of the Mt. Kaputar National Park/Nandewar Range so i eventually found a spot near Boggabri to get a shot over a field of young cotton. Hurried and hand held, but better than no shot.

Nice shot. I would crop some of the foreground and perhaps try a B&W conversion.

Serenity in pixels. I love its calmness.

This image seems a bit dull and flat to me, but has great potential.

nice norwest, it does lack punch and for me this comes more from a composition point of view, the shed is quite prominent but does not quite hold enough interest, I would be interested in a slightly wider crop so that one can appreciate the whole scene moreso than the shed. This would also make the field of cotton more of a player in the image.

When does the cotton get harvested? Did you survive the floods up there ok?

This has only a slight crop and a few levels adjustments for a bit more pop.

It depends on the season weather and particular planting schedule for each farm , but late March/April/early May for defoliation and picking is a close guide. Defoliation is the spraying by crop duster with a herbicide to force the plant to drop it's leaves so they won't be collected with the cotton by the harvester.

The below shots are from late March 2009, a week or two after defoliation and ready for harvesting. The plant goes from all green like the young crop above, to green leaf with white and pink flower to all white with a crimson stem.

We were stuck for about a week in the floods but it wasn't as bad as xmas 2010. Though it still did a deal of damage to the last of the wheat crops and a lot of the dry land (not irrigated and protected by irrigation levee banks) cotton.

I love that white cotton one with the sunset, that is the stuff!

with regard to your original one, how about this for a crop and a bit of jazz?

I feel this compo leads the viewer better thru the image - my opinion anyway :) if you want it removed just let meknow.
