Found this one on the side of the road....

Looks like some sort of alien close-up.

Any critique, tips etc etc appreciated.

Interesting - although I'm not sure I like the colour in this... not just that it's blue but that there's other colours as well. Maybe if it was just shades of blue it might be better? I think it could have done with a little more space on the left and right or a much tighter crop if you know what I mean.

I guess this demonstrates you didn't grow up in Australia, Suren. What you have there is the discarded final moult from a cicada. I think just about every Aussie kid would have collected these and the adult cicadas each Summer.

It certainly is an interesting view of (what to many of us is) a very familiar object. I didn't like it at first but I think it is growing on me. I think I'd like to see it without the leaf in the background.

I would try with a red hue or gel Suren.

I like it, the gelled light gives a different take on the image. I would crop from teh left and top to bring the head of the shell more towards the intersection of the top left 3rd.

All blue. A porno insect? They don't come from Mars...they come from Hurstville.

A touch more DOF would have improved the image a tad....but still an interesting photograph. How did you light it?

Thankx Rodney. I've got a dual tone going on this. I thought I'd use color to give it more mood. Will try crop.

Thanks Andrew. I was wondering whether the presentation and title may mislead but obviously you've identified it. I do admit I didn't know what the hell it was at first hence the reason to pocket it for later inspection.

Thanks. I was planning on a crop initially but decided to leave the tummy in the picture as well. Will have another look.

Nice work...I love the gelled flash, it certainly accentuates the other-world feel of the image.

I too remember collecting Cicada shells?
