Strandbeest

Found some interesting things to look at in Federation Square. The Strandbeest are created by artist and engineer Theo Jansen. They are designed to walk freely on beaches and powered by the wind.

The name "strandbeest" means beach animal in Dutch. Theo Jansen has been working on various forms of strandbeest since 1990, and many of his creations walk around beaches freely as if they possessed a primitive form of artificial life.

Crazy and Cool. Would be a bit freaky if you were sleeping on the beach and woke up with this ambling past.

Yeah, they are very fascinating creations. Need to watch the videos on youtube to really appreciate how amazing Theo Jansen's work really is.

Not sure if the particular examples shown here will end up living on a beach somewhere, or if they are supposed to go on a world tour for various exhibits like this one.

Went back to Federation Square for another look with less people around, but unfortunately the strandbeest was behind some bollards.
