I can only assume this is a downsize issue, the waves and water droplets do come out very sharp which may contribute, i will have a look at the original focus point on the raw file.

LOL@hair. Nice decisive moment there. I think I got a very similar shot but it was at 1/400 so slightly blurry!
#3 could be part of a series but not strong on it's own.
Regarding teh lighting, you probably noted it as well, you had to get them at the right moment or else they were in the shadow of teh wave which made for a crappy image imo.
