With heavy shadows thrown by hats in our harsh sunlight, dark/light clothing and retaining colour in a very bright sky background, i attempt to let the sunlight do the primary work, surenj, but within the limits of not allowing it to amplify the above problems.
I much prefer the lesser difficulty (& advantages) of back lighting than turning the subject around and coping with shadows and lights/darks contrasts in the extreme harshness of our direct sunshine.
A few more backlit shots. As a comparison, the horse shot is -2/3 ev to avoid a blown sky and jockey silks (still not quite enough) and +1 flash to fill the dark near side of the horse, which is also a touch underdone.
